Importance of School Lunch

Since School Lunch Hero Day and Mental Health Awareness Month are both celebrated in May, it is important to talk about how school lunches play a role in mental health. If you are a school lunch hero, thank you for making lunch possible as lunchtime can provide an opportunity for students to socialize and connect with their peers. Schools can also use lunchtime as an opportunity to educate students about healthy eating habits, as well as offer healthy and balanced meals. This can ensure that students are getting the nutrients they need to support their mental health.

My Hot Lunchbox understands the importance of providing nutritious meals to students. That is why we are proud to celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 5th, 2023. This day recognizes the hard work and dedication of school nutrition professionals who provide meals to students every day. School Lunch Hero Day was established by Jarrett Krosoczka, a children’s author and illustrator, who was inspired to honor the hardworking food service employees at his former school. After returning to his old school, Krosoczka was pleasantly surprised to discover that his childhood lunch lady was still working there and even remembered him. This experience motivated Krosoczka to work with the School Nutrition Association (SNA) to honor the school nutrition professionals who work hard to make sure that students have access to healthy and delicious meals. These heroes go above and beyond to make sure that students have access to a meal that fuels not only their bodies but their minds. There are many easy ways to celebrate these heroes. Your school can participate by hanging signs around your school celebrating food service providers that celebrate food staff, having students hand-write cards, recognizing your food service providers on social media, and even decorating the school lunchroom.
Crave-worthy restaurants can be school lunch heroes too!
